Just tell me what it is already, then. I have no idea what it is, and I'm not going to start listing a bunch of them so you can tell me they're all wrong.
[If there's one thing she dislikes more than the occult, it's being challenged. He only has himself to blame as she reaches over to try and put her hand on his arm.]
[she can touch him. England is confused by that, but he allows it to happen. perhaps this is Shiho's power...
and then she has access to all of his memories. he doesn't recall much of his younger years, but anything England remembers is open to her. there are scenes of him with other countries, throughout different centuries, his time with America, and fights with Scotland and France. there are memories of him having tea with the Queen, as well as more recent ones of him in Cerealia, where he talks about infiltrating CERES. and England himself has no idea that Shiho can see anything like that]
[He's as unguarded and as confused as Shiho would have expected. (But then again, most people didn't expect psychometry until it was too late.)
She doesn't bother to dig into his memories since all she wanted to know was what he was. That, and nothing broke people's trust in you like digging through their memories without permission. But even with the very barest of readings, skimming along his thoughts and immediate feelings, she can feel the staggeringly huge amount of memories inside of this guy, of years and years and years...of centuries.
She frowns, taking her hand away and looking at him.]
...I know what you are.
[Because she'd just read a country and her immediate fall-back was making a meta joke about vampires.
[Shiho is unreadable! still, England looks somewhat impressed, and he gives her a faint smile. obviously, she has a gift, because he doesn't think she is bluffing]
...Being what I am, I cannot date humans, nor am I allowed to kill them, or get involved with their affairs. I can only offer my advice and loyalty to my citizens. [there were other, messier reasons why England chose not to date humans. some countries did, he knew, but he would not get into that if he didn't have to]
[Being able to read people by touch means that you have to learn from a very young age not to show anything on your face. Shiho's had tons of practice.
She's not sure how dating a country even worked...didn't that technically make it so that you were actually dating a million other people at the same time??]
Yeah...I can see how that could be really weird. But...who can you date, then? You do know that non-humans could be anything? Even zombies?
That is a question I don't know the answer to yet. At one time, there were five of us here, so whatever happened, whether CERES found our code, or something else, they managed to salvage us.
I guess that means maybe you're not tied to the land...and not to the people, either?
And if there were five, how do you split it up when you date? [A threesome? An open relationship?? And again: how does countries dating even work.....]
[England's not even going to respond to that second question. it makes his head hurt]
We are tied to the land and people... Well, we were. I don't know if that's the case now. [his heart feels so empty] I still want to protect any of my citizens that have been brought to Cerealia.
[He just skipped that second question.....that just makes her want to know the answer even more. But she can empathize with his desire to protect others, with suddenly being cut off from someone (or in his case, lots of someones) that you cared about.
So she let's that second question go for now.]
Probably not right now. But if you find any citizens here, I bet they'd still be tied to you somehow.
As long as they're actually from your version of the country, that is.
I have spoken to a few people from other versions of England. Most of them don't know about me, though. But. Perhaps I'll tell them. in time. [he seems kind of wistful at that]
[it's a valid question, so England doesn't mind her tone that much]
Not everyone has powers like you. What do you think would have happened if I'd started off by introducing myself as a country? People would have thought me mad. [England believes he would not have made friends...]
I don't think so. At most they'd probably ask you if you were sure. [Or they'd get disproportionately excited about a country being a person.] Besides, if they think you're mad at least they won't forget you in a hurry.
And you don't want your relationships to be built on a lie.
I believe you may be more of an optimist than myself. When America and Russia were here, they were very open about who they were, and I watched as many people did not take them seriously.
[Shiho...an optimist....she never thought she'd see the day when someone called her that. (Though she is one, despite being a psychometer and despite knowing that quite a lot of people were garbage on the inside. She blamed Minamoto and his ability to make them all believe in the best, and in the future.)]
It doesn't matter if they don't take them seriously though, does it? Why is that important to you?
It does when you're trying to make a new life for yourself. [this subject of conversation is difficult for England, because he does care what people think of him, even when he says he doesn't] After talking to a few people here, I realized, what I was back at home doesn't matter anymore. I was immortal, had a better job, and any luxury I could ever want. Here, I have none of that. My status is gone.

Not exactly. I just. Live longer.

Doesn't that kind of limit your choices, then? Or are there a lot of personified countries running around here?
[She hadn't thought to look for countries. She'd always assumed they were just masses of land.]
And if your world is gone, how are you still here?
