In the beginning, she befriended Mary partly because of what happened when they were in the Ferris wheel together, learning that she had powers too and then partly because she learned that Hyoubu knew her. She had to protect her from that senior citizen okay...who knew what he would get up to, stalking girls and such. But in the end, she actually saw a lot of her younger self in Mary and she can't help but want to protect her and to give her the normalcy that she had craved when she was little.
