Alrighty, I'm gonna do my best to try and sell you on a series that is a bit of a hard viewing. Like, I'm not kidding!

Elfen Lied is chock full of blood, guts, gore, full frontal nudity, murder, torture, child abuse, infanticide, genocide, misogyny, eugenics, body horror, child neglect and abandonment, and some people find issue with the cousin incest that happens in the series but it's easily the least offensive thing on this list???

Anyway, story time.

THIS IS OUR MAIN FEMALE CAST (From left, Mayu, Yuka, Nyuu, and Nana) LOOK AT HOW CUTE THEY ALL ARE. Like, really, this series is really good about introducing cute, likeable girls (even Yuka is likeable if you don't consider her loving her cousin as a negative). Unfortunately, the story's also good about having HORRIBLE THINGS happen to them too.

See, Lucy is a mutant who escapes from a research facility, leaving all the halls bright red and covered in human paste in the process, and coincidentally washes up on the beach of Kamakura the same day cousins Yuka and Kouta go to the beach to commemorate Kouta coming back after being away for eight years. Lucy develops a second personality called Nyuu, who's basically Chii from Chobits but not a robot, and the cousins take care of her instead of...you know, taking her to the police like normal people would when they find a bleeding, naked girl on the beach. Shenanigans ensue when a bunch of soldiers come looking for Lucy, and the shit only continues to hit the fan from there.

In addition to all the blood and gore, there's lots of fanservice. Like, Lucy's ass or tits on display, pseudo-harem antics, etc. The manga is worse about it than the anime.

Personally, I'd love to see the following characters just because I think they're the most interesting and easiest to put into an RP setting.

Nana: THE SWEETEST CINNAMON ROLL TO EVER CINNAMON, Nana is a Silpelit Diclonius who's sent to retrieve Lucy and gets her shit kicked in for it. Nana then joins the residents of the Maple House, becoming best friends with Mayu, in order to keep an eye on Lucy via Nyuu. She sees Kurama as her father.

Bandou: A special assault team operative Lucy maims when he comes to kill her/take her back to the facility. He's kind of a huge asshole and has a personal vendetta against Lucy, always trying to have a rematch with her to repay her for what she did to him.

Kurama: Nana's adopted father, Mariko's biological father, and Lucy's biggest enemy. His blood feud with Lucy is so vicious that Lucy eagerly attacks and hurts people he cares about in order to get back at him for ruining her life.

Mariko: Kurama's diclonius daughter. She's only like five or six years old, but she's just as vicious as Lucy due to being isolated and experimented on from birth. Considered the strongest Diclonius, she's the only person who cleans Lucy's clock in the anime, but doesn't quite do the same amount of damage in the manga.

The anime used to be available on Netflix, but just about any streaming site should have it. Either the sub or dub is fine to watch too, though I'd recommend the sub if you don't want to miss certain plot details. Though the dub has the fantastic performance of Kira Vincent-Davis as Lucy, which everyone should see at least once. The manga is also available on pretty much any manga hosting website. There's no official English translation, so expect some...weird translation lines.

There's Keiichi's best friend Rena, who wants to take home everything that's cute and can, depending on how she's feeling, be adorable herself or one of many different kinds of terrifying. There's also his best friend Mion (yes, he has two equally best friends, deal with it), who's the leader of their club and has a crunchy perverted old man shell with a sweet, fluffy, girly center. Or how about her twin sister, Shion, the more outwardly feminine of the two and... actually, let's skip Shion for now. Next is Rika, a sweet, polite girl who's so nice to poor, abused Keiichi has infuriatingly few gifs, but whatever. Finally, last but not least is Satoko, who is the very image of a proper lady and likes to keep Keiichi on his toes.

Heisuke's usually happy and cheery, can seriously fuck someone's shit up, and never gets to finish a meal if he sits next to Shinpachi. He's also very good at being the bridesmaid, over-reacting, second-guessing himself, and comes with his own built-in leash to keep him in line... even though his bffs are the ones who need to be watched - he just gets dragged into things.
