Out with the old, in with the new as they say, and this ViViD level is no different. Ever progressive and ever mindful, CERES has decided in their war against the evil carbon footprint to give citizens both new and old a lesson in healthy living. To show this, they've created a level all about... recycling, or as close to recycling as a company like CERES can get. (Which isn't very close at all, honestly.)

This, of course, means that when you're dumped in to today's ViViD level, the first thing that will hit you is the stench. It's vile and rancid and the type of stench that makes a person want to give up smelling altogether, and when you finally open your eyes, you'll see why. There's trash everywhere. The buildings are decrepit and crumbling, the cars are broken down and rusted, and overall, it looks like the apocalypse rolled right on through. Which is weird because this is definitely not a post-apocalyptic game. Yet wandering around this pathetic excuse for a ViViD level will just reveal more of the same -- it's a total wasteland.

And if you look up, you will see a billboard.

RECYCLING AND YOU: HOW NOT TO BE A DIRTY WASTE OF SPACE

You'll only have a moment to be offended by the sign before, amongst the piles of trash and rubble, there's another, smaller pile of trash and rubble. The only difference is this one can talk.

Welcome to The Dumpster Dive, my cool cats and sweet kittens. A brand new ViViD level, created and innovated to you by CERES's very creative and innovative technicians. We're all here to help you learn to Reuse, Reduce and Recycle, givin' you kids some tools to help you lessen your impact on the planet. After all, we're all here together on this great planet of Tellus. Wouldn't want to ruin it, right? Ha ha!

Happy Trash Day to Cerealians one and all!

//SCENARIOS.EXE

PHASE I

[ 6:00 ] So, you're here.

You're probably sitting in a pile of trash because, well, everywhere is a pile of trash. You're in a landscape of trashiness and there's no escape. Your only option is to give in to the sweet, sweet pull of the garbage. The buildings are crumbling, the sidewalks are a mess of bottles (but no bottle caps), rubble, and empty chip bags, and you're stuck in this... trash. This garbage. This hellhole.

Wasn't recycling supposed to be clean?

It probably takes a rat skittering over your foot to get you going but like any good game, the protagonist needs to move. If you're going to find out anything in this trash heap, you'll need to explore a bit. See if you can find someone else! Or something else. Maybe someone more experienced with ViViD can help you figure out how to log out. Even if logging out doesn't seem to be working right now. You should be careful too because one wrong step might cause the pile of trash you're standing on give way and send you into the sewers below.

Which means there are rats, there are bugs, the ground is unsteady and... yep. It's starting to rain.

Good luck.

PHASE II

[ 8:00 ] And then come the... trash drones.

They zero in on any living thing in this ViViD level -- if you’re moving, if you’re breathing, if you have some sort of a pulse, they’ll be there. And they’ll grab you and take you away. No matter how many you shoot down, more and more and more will come, never stopping until you're swarmed completely by them. They have to get you! You're garbage, you're garbage, you're garbage! You're garbage!

And so, you're snatched up.

Don’t worry, though. After a short flight (wave hello to your fellow drone-napped neighbor!), you'll arrive at three huge trash chutes with three equally huge signs above them. GARBAGE, RECYCLING, and COMPOST hang above the chutes and the drones pause just momentarily before announcing one of these options in a robotic voice. You've been sorted and without any preamble, the drone will dump you in whichever one it decides.

Hopefully you don’t end up in the compost. Gross.

Of course, once you down there, there's plenty to poke around in (or not much if you're still not into the whole trash thing). It's piles and piles and piles of trash as far as the eye can see! Again! If you're especially clever, you may be able to use the trash to build a way out of the chute. The very, very long chute. Maybe there's someone around that can help you? And better do so quick, who knows what CERES has deemed to be "recycling" this time.

PHASE III

[ 11:25 ] CERES's standards continue to shine on again, because after some time, those chutes will finally start working. So if you've been separated from a friend through any of this ordeal, don't worry about it. You're all gonna end up in the same place anyway.

Which is the incinerator, of course! (Wait, that’s not how recycling works.)

The ground beneath you shifts, enough to knock over whatever flimsy excuse for an escape plan you have, and suddenly all of the trash, compost or recycling will be dumped down into an underground furnace -- along with everyone stuck there, of course. Bit by bit, everything moves ever closer towards that red hot furnace and it’s clear that everything's going to be dumped straight into the fire and burned. Say your farewells. Make nice with your neighbor. Finalize your will because --

Oh. It stopped.

Looks like it jammed.

It doesn't remain jammed for long because CERES is, if anything, highly efficient. So it starts up again. But then stops again. And then starts again. And then stops again. This may be a glitch in the level, actually.

So, you're still getting ever closer to fiery death, but... slowly. Very slowly. In fact, you could probably walk away from said fiery death faster than you're going towards it. It's like they can't even program a near death experience right!

PHASE IV

[ 11:25 ] Maybe you avoided the incinerator. Maybe you ended up in a different part of the level altogether. Maybe you just got lost. Either way, now you’re stuck with the age-old hobby of enthusiasts and the exceptionally desperate alike.

Dumpster diving.

And CERES wouldn't send you down there without an incentive, you know. If you look, it seems like there might be something valuable, something incredibly important and just for you. A shiny item that you’ve always wanted right from home and it’s right there in your grasp, something precious that you could never get in Cerealia. How it came to be there, nestled between an empty carton of eggs and a half-eaten cheeseburger, no one knows, but you'll be filled with the inescapable, all-consuming urge to go get it. Just jump right into that dumpster and get it.

The more you resist the urge, the more it'll hurt. (As in, physically hurt actually. The feeling will be comparable to your fingernails slowly being plucked out.)

This is ViViD though and the moment you hit the trash, the spell breaks. You'll see that your most precious thing, whatever it was, was never actually there. Instead, you seem to have actually grabbed something else and whatever it is, you can't let go of it. Be it an empty bottle of bacon soda or a bicycle tire with a giant hole in it, it's attached to your hand now and no matter what you do, you can't get it off.

Hopefully whatever you grabbed wasn't too big because it looks like you're not getting rid of it. Not till you beat the level.

BONUS

[ why : o'clock ] The odd thing about being stuck in a trash wasteland is that you can go for ages without seeing another person. Ages. Of course, CERES doesn't like that very much since ViViD games should be co-operative! Player with player! Player against player! Players who shouldn't be playing at all. That's the type of play CERES supports.

Which means the longer you go without seeing another person, the more you might feel an itch. It gets under your skin, making you feel dizzier and dizzier, and shorter and shorter of breath until -- you pass out. Vision going dark, breathing cutting out, and down you go into the trash and whatever this ViViD level has planned next.

It won't take long. You'll wake up feeling slightly confined and there will be a moving body next to you. It seems as if you've finally, finally found someone -- and they're really, really close. In fact, maybe a little too close? When you open your eyes, you'll see that the two of you may be bound together in a way that might be familiar to some.

But instead of a shirt, it's just a garbage bag. A really, really strong garbage bag that can't be broken out of no matter how strong you happen to be. No laser eyes, no super powers, nothing will separate you from this person other than, well, getting along.

There really is only one question you have to ask yourself now. Just one.

What the hell does this have to do with recycling?

[The smell bothers her much more than the lack of space, but this is Rise we're talking about. She doesn't necessarily believe in a personal bubble and as far as she can see? There are people much worse to get stuck with than Minato. She holds perfectly still while he tries to work his way out and at his failure she frowns, too.

This is really not how things are supposed to go. But the suggestion's a welcome one and her expression melts into a friendly smile.]

We'll make the most of it. What's your name? [May as well find out who she's stuck with.]

[personal profile] moribound 2016-01-06 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
[That's the thought Minato has in mind too, since it's much better being stuck with someone you're at least on good terms with.]

I'm Minato...Minato Arisato. You?

Rise Kujikawa. It's nice to meet you. [The nice thing is that nobody will really recognize her here. There's no Risette on Tellus.

On the other hand, there's no Risette on Tellus and now she's not sure how to really feel about that. But she smiles nevertheless and decides she can worry about it later.]
Been here long, Minato-san? [Yep. Already going with a first name basis. She doesn't waste time, sorry about her.]
moribound: SOJUICE (4)

[personal profile] moribound 2016-01-06 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[Minato would have been a little weirded out a year back, but the best thing about having three stalkers is that he's just not bothered to argue about something as minor as a girl using his first name with him- it's not like it seems she's going to budge on it at that, clearly being the more extroverted one of the two.

But huh, Rise Kujikawa? There's a slightly raised eyebrow at that, since he does recognize that name in passing. If only he knew she was supposed to have performed in Iwatodai two years back...]

It's nice to meet you too, Kujikawa-san. I've been here for two months...speaking of which, you're Risette, aren't you? [BAM. Straight to the point, he sure doesn't waste time either.]

[personal profile] pseudonyms 2016-01-06 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
W-what? [Annnnd just like that she gaps at him suddenly. He...how...huh??? The pleasantries will go on hold for a second.] That's not me. [Wait.] I mean it is, but how did you...?
moribound: (54)

[personal profile] moribound 2016-01-07 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
We're from the same world. [Plainly stated.] I've listened to a few of your songs...they're pretty catchy.
pseudonyms: (Do you really want to throw it all away)

[personal profile] pseudonyms 2016-01-07 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
Really? [Should she be flattered or weirded out by that? Then again, if Minato claimed they were from the same world then that had to be proof that the world wasn't destroyed. Or so she thinks.] Thanks. [She suddenly looks a little shy, something that's not really in the Risette personality but all genuine Rise.] I didn't think I would meet anyone from my world here, or at least anyone who knew me.
moribound: (40)

[personal profile] moribound 2016-01-07 09:08 am (UTC)(link)
You're welcome. [And well, he understands that feeling of being alone in a new place- story of his life up until the last year he had.]

That's what I thought too, until I met two of them within my first month here- it was quite an experience both times. [Then he pauses and searches Rise's face, wondering if he should talk about them to see if Rise would know who he's talking about.]

Yosuke Hanamura and Yu Narukami...do you know them?
pseudonyms: (And all those skeletons you hide)

[personal profile] pseudonyms 2016-01-07 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[!!! Wait a minute! There's a look of recognition on her face and she'd flail a little if they weren't attached inside the garbage bag.]

Yu-senpai and Yosuke-senpai are here?! [Rapture! Joy! She's not only not alone, some of her friends are actually here.] When did they show up? Are they okay? [TELL HER EVERYTHING, MINATO. She'll want to learn more about him and how he met the boys in a bit but she has to make sure the others are okay.]
moribound: (23)

[personal profile] moribound 2016-01-07 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[Thank goodness she didn't flail, since they're on shaky ground as is and not even Minato can handle being buried in garbage.]

They were in the same group as me and yeah, they're doing fine. [Senpai, huh? I probably shouldn't mention things between Yu-san and I are a bit complicated...]
pseudonyms: (Snakebite heart with a bubblegum smile)

[personal profile] pseudonyms 2016-01-07 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
[No Minato please don't mention that just yet...give her time to adjust. Her mood's immediately changed and there are practically little tiny hearts in her eyes at the idea that her friends are out there somewhere.]

We have to work even harder to get out of this bag then. [She says that, but she's not entirely ready to just push Minato out of the way either. The boy's been very polite so far and she appreciates that. And anyway...making new friends? It's still a nice thing.] You didn't meet them in garbage like this, too, did you Minato-san~?
moribound: SOJUICE (6)

[personal profile] moribound 2016-01-08 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
No, I met Hanamura-san while we had to play Tetris to get out of ViViD. As for Yu-san... [Yu-san? Hmm!] he was bitten by a hug bug while we were lost in a jungle, and he's the one who met me first. [All of this is said with a perfectly straight face, which clashes sharply with Rise's own excitement.]
pseudonyms: (as you'll see by the way)

[personal profile] pseudonyms 2016-01-09 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
[Tetris makes sense to her because it's all one giant video game. It's the other part that confuses her. Jungle? Hug bug?] A hug bug? [She's even repeating it because senpai???? Let's investigate some more.] When were you two in a jungle? I thought the whole planet was like this.
moribound: (19)

[personal profile] moribound 2016-01-09 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
It's the other way around. Cerealia's the only city on this planet...the rest of it's jungle, mountains, oceans and more jungle. [Did he say there's a lot of jungle? Because there really is a lot of that, and he's deadpanning it.] There was an incident a while back where we were taken outside the city by the native spirits of this world, that's when we sort of bumped into each other.
pseudonyms: (I walk a fine line)

[personal profile] pseudonyms 2016-01-10 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[It's strange to her that Minato's so deadpan the way that Yu can be and maybe that makes a little more sense to why they met. Birds of a feather or whatever, right? Still, she's taking what Minato says and she's genuinely pouting because nobody asked her if she wanted to be stuck on a jungle-planet!]

Native spirits, huh? [This isn't too surprising but she does shift to try and pull out of their garbage-bag shirt. And maybe this is a weird question, but she asks anyway.] Are there monsters on this planet, too?
moribound: (43)

[personal profile] moribound 2016-01-11 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Plenty. [Minato's already starting to be a little reminded of Yukari when he sees that pout, not because she does that a lot but because she's always been very expressive.

He tugs at his sleeve again before getting back to the conversation- no dice, seemingly.]
You should have seen the pterodactyls...their mating calls are messed up. [What?]
pseudonyms: (as you'll see by the way)

[personal profile] pseudonyms 2016-01-11 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
[Minato please don't scare the poor girl more than necessary. That pout automatically shifts to something else that could be described as incredulous all over again.]

Pterodactyls. Are you sure? [This is seriously starting to get out of hand. Just what was this boy thinking? But there's one more important question and she's not sure it's appropriate to ask him, but anything's possible here.] What about monsters from other worlds? ["Our worlds." She could probably summon Kanzeon to scan for shadows but that might freak him out.]
moribound: (85)

[personal profile] moribound 2016-01-12 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure. [...I'll pass on mentioning that one of them thought that I'd make a good mate.

The next question makes him wonder if he should say anything since Rise isn't necessarily a Persona-user even if she knows both Yu and Yosuke, so he pulls at his side of the garbage bag again before giving what he considers a safe answer.]

As for monsters from other worlds...if they do exist here, I've only seen them in ViViD levels.
pseudonyms: (Tonight take all the ghosts)

[personal profile] pseudonyms 2016-01-12 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[Which is both a relief and a stressor as far as she's concerned. If there are Shadows here, she'd really have to up her game to make sure they wouldn't hurt anyone. And while Minato made the right call not to immediately say anything, if he knows both Yu and Yosuke then perhaps they've mentioned something to him. But Minato still said "if."]

And if people had to fight these monsters? How could they do that? [Will their Personas even work? Questions for the ages.]
moribound: (39)

[personal profile] moribound 2016-01-13 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
[Minato considers Rise's question with a thoughtful hum. That's twice now that she's asked about monsters that she shouldn't be aware of from their world unless she's a fellow Persona user, and from the looks of it she's not so much asking about other words as her world.]

We still have our powers here. I haven't seen a monster attack yet, but we can defend ourselves. ['Our powers'. There, he sort of said it.]
pseudonyms: (Like clock-work she's in control)

[personal profile] pseudonyms 2016-01-13 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
[Over time she's become good at reading people and dealing with people. You have to be good at PR if you want to be an idol, after all. She can pick up on the subtlety just enough but it only raises more questions. She can't just assume right away that he's a Persona user despite the fact that he's confirmed he has some sort of ability.

But maybe she can use this to her advantage. With that decided, she widens her eyes a little and bats her lashes, leaning in just a little closer to make sure Minato's paying attention.]

Think your powers could get us out of this bag, Minato-san? [Think carefully, Minato.]
moribound: (56)

[personal profile] moribound 2016-01-13 08:57 am (UTC)(link)
My powers... [Minato's picked up on it and Rise's easy on the eyes, but he's still going to back away as much as possible as he's not a fan most people being in his face. Sorry, Rise.]

I could try using my Persona to cut this bag open, but you might want to look away. [??? The way he says it one would think he has to perform some kind of stripping ritual, only the truth is more (Or less) complicated than it sounds.]
pseudonyms: (Sit back gotta catch my breath)

[personal profile] pseudonyms 2016-01-13 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
[How rude. But it's fine, she can mesh with most personality types so she's not really offended despite the small pout. That, too, quickly falls away when he says one key word.]

You're a Persona user, too? [Considering the fact she's from a point in time where Persona users are only a few select people, she finds this reasonably shocking.] Why would I need to look away for that? If your Persona can get us out of here then use it.
moribound: (40)

[personal profile] moribound 2016-01-14 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
My way of summoning a Persona is different from what you're used to. [His tone is light, but Minato means every bit of that.] But if you're sure... [Just tell him and he'll do it, he's just tired of all these assumptions about his Evoker.]
pseudonyms: (It's on...)

[personal profile] pseudonyms 2016-01-14 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure, just hurry up! [Oh look, there's that bossy tone. She doesn't mean to be rude but now she's more than anxious to a.) get out of this bag if they can and b.) see just what sort of Persona Minato's capable of wielding. She leans back further as though he needs the room, studying him critically to see if she can sense anything about him.

Even now Rise's not entirely sure how her Persona and her powers that come with it really, truly work. But she keeps quiet on that front.]
We're ready. ["We're", Rise? Okay.]
