omg jelle did you know the story of amsterdam's turning into a city instead of "some place no one cares about" i was reading this history book about it…… my mom didn't know but she also forgot who willem van oranje is when we were standing in front of his tomb so i don't trust her?

ok so (i'll tell you anyway) ONCE UPON A TIME amsterdam was insignificant. an old man living there was dying and so they gave him his final communion before death, only for him to shortly after go into spasms/barf/die. a woman noticed that in the pool of barf was his communion cracker, and they decided to burn it and the vomit (on the basis that that's the least sacrilegious way to get rid of that shit). so they tossed it into the fire………and it didn't burn!! miracle!! they put the wafer into the church and a few years later the church burnt down……but the wafer survived!! MIRACLE!! and then they built another church and gave the wafer its own shrine and there was another fire but GOD'S OWN VOMITY WAFER survived yet again!!! wow!!!

so amsterdam turned into a bone fide pilgrimage spot and big city and iirc the site of the vomit cracker church is now the torture museum right near the train station and that's why amsterdam is the capital

I ACTUALLY DO KNOW MOSTLY BC the city i lived in was the biggest city of the netherlands in medieval times and was probably going to become the capital
