Tenka & Mary ;

holy shit Tenka loves Mary

Tenka loves Mary with the same love that he has for all the kids in the village and then some, just because he gets to focus a little bit more on her as opposed to the village where he can have 3 to 4 kids climbing on him all at once fighting for his attention. But what he feels for her is definitely just pure, familial, undaunted love. He wants to hold her when she's crying, give her all the advice to be stronger, and protect her from anything in the world that might hurt too much. or even hurt a little. She's not yet at the age where Tenka thinks that she needs to know the horrors of the world - a result of not knowing that much about her past - so he isn't quite pushing her the same way that he's pushing Soramaru.

Rather, the way that he treats her is a lot more akin to Chuutarou. Yeah, he knows that Mary wants to get stronger and help people and that's great, he's always going to support that-- but he also thinks that she's still very young and can have time to learn those things properly later. For now, he just wants to bundle her up in blankets and give her hugs and defend her himself. A lot of the ways that he's going to encourage her to be stronger are going to be in words, advice and encouragement so that she can see her own potential unlike how he'll sometimes let Soramaru run off on his own. Tenka's not ready for Mary to run off her on her own yet, he's not ready for her to grow up completely and he's kind of afraid that she might try that too early!!

but she talks to him.... and she's open and honest with him and that's already a big plus. It's also a huge negative because it completely and totally opened up a wound of guilt in Tenka's heart. When she told him her secret, he wanted to tell her so badly that she's not a monster because that would make him a monster too.... but Tenka's a big pile of secrets and has a tendency to not want to burden the people around him with his own sadness. So he didn't tell Mary, even though she told him that she felt bad calling him family even though she was keeping something from him. and it kills him a little bit because maybe he is being bad family - yet he'll let her call him a good big brother. it's an awful dichotomy

except the truth of the matter is that Tenka really does just want Mary to see the beautiful things in the world. she seems sheltered and unexperienced and Tenka doesn't want to scare her with stories of evil humans who would experiment on a young boy before condemning him to death and separating him from his family like what happened to him. maybe one day he'll tell her, if someone lights a fire underneath his ass, but..... well. it's not going to happen any time soon. because he'd rather come up with ways for her to be less afraid of the world

he's not sure if she can make the separation yet that even though some things are bad, not all things are bad -- like you can see it with Chuutaoru and how he was about to trust someone that smelled of blood in canon. Tenka teaches his younger brothers a lot of things but he protects them from a lot of the gruesome things in life, to the point that sometimes they're utterly blind. Tenka doesn't want Mary to be blind, but he also doesn't want to introduce her to the darkness of human hearts just yet

rather, he'd much prefer to give her presents and see her smile through every single day. because she's not a monster, to him and he doesn't know how to emphasize it enough. She's just his precious little sister that he'd do everything in his power to protect and care for.
