MAH SOUL SISTER~~

Much like Athena thinks of Ryuko as a sister, Ryuko would also say that Athena is like the sister she never had... if she hadn't found out that she has a biological sister. Even so, Athena is pretty much Ryuko's rock here, she's the one person who's kind of keeping her grounded in this insane world. Initially, Ryuko let Athena in her life because she seemed nice and perhaps helpless. She wanted to protect Athena from bad people in an unknown world, but somehow it's almost like Athena is the one looking after Ryuko most of the time.

Because of their sisterly dynamic, Ryuko strangely finds herself seeking Athena's approval at times, something she has never really cared about all her life. Athena helps around so much with her two jobs and cooking, that Ryuko feels like she needs to do something to be useful, too. She really respects Athena, for her wits, her beauty, and her ability to make friends so easily... something Ryuko is terrible at! Ryuko would easily admit that between the two of them, Ryuko is lucky to have Athena, and not so much the other way around!

There is a part of Ryuko, deep down in her heart, that's legitimately frightened of what Athena would think if she found out she wasn't 100% human. Athena may not know about the parasitic Life Fiber aliens that feed on humans in Ryuko's world, but Ryuko certainly knows, and the fact that she was infused with some of that DNA inside her makes her feel like a monster. If Athena were to feel the same way about Ryuko, even if Ryuko knows Athena is better than that, the possibility of it still breaks her heart. But if Athena doesn't know who Ryuko really is, then can their friendship really be authentic based on her perception of Ryuko alone? These are the kind of things Ryuko tries not to think about, and part of the reason she keeps many people in Cerealia at arm's length. Truthfully, she's really grateful that Athena is the kind of person who wants to be Ryuko's friend even if Ryuko were to push her away, because those are the kind of people she needs most in her life.
