OH BOY SHIRASU.

So for a long time, Shirasu was a nonentity to him. Sousei didn't entirely cut Tenka off from his own life, in that he would still get rumors and the like, and Tenka was a large fish in a small pond; news about him came all the time. So he knew that Tenka had adopted some random Fuuma ninja. He just didn't care.

Things have changed an awful lot since.

The fact that Shirasu betrayed Tenka is awful, and Sousei hates it--betrayal is the worst, and he can be sure of that now that he has experienced it for himself. It is awful that Tenka had to taste it, and he never would have wished that on him, but that's not the worst of Shirasu's crimes as far as he's concerned. The worst thing Shirasu did was betraying Soramaru and Chuutarou, who were innocents in this entire disaster. Protecting the innocent is a Yamainu law. But he never thought that he would have to protect children from the people they considered their own family, and that infuriates. Just like everyone else in this manga, Sousei has strong feelings on Family. In his case, it is that adopted family can be as important if not more than real family.

Shirasu was given the perfect family.

And he threw it away, and Sousei will always hold that against him--but in a way, he also pities him for it. He hasn't quite gotten sophisticated enough about Shirasu's motivations to realize that they could be each other if the circumstances had been different, or something similar. But he does know that Shirasu has lost everything, and that's pitiable.

(It's also necessary to point out here that Shirasu caused Sousei's own personal failure re: protecting Soramaru, and while it's his own fault, HE'S STILL BITTER.)

And then here......he found out that Shirasu killed their parents, and he doesn't care about the circumstances--murder is murder, and it's deplorable and heinous and he's REAL MAD still. So basically, he hates Shirasu, 100%. He has no intentions of ever forgiving him, and he wants Shirasu to suffer for all that he's done.

But he won't be the person to do so. Sousei is aware enough of himself to know that he would not be fair and unbiased in that. And if what Shirasu is fighting towards is chaos, then Sousei is order and law, and in order for that to be true, he knows that he has to obey the letter of the law and make sure that Shirasu is treated fairly. So no, if he can avoid it, he won't kill him. But that hatred is there deeply, and he won't ever forget what Shirasu has done either, even if he is forced to live with his presence for now.

Okay so. At first Sousei really did just think that there was something off about Kaoru. He's odd, and reacts oddly about some things more than others, but he has no hard proof and honestly can't even be certain about it himself. (For the record, he also still thinks Kaoru is a girl....boy he'll be pissed when he finds out otherwise.)

Anyway, lately, they've gotten passive aggressive and snippy at each other. And while Kaoru is pretty good at acting chagrined and polite and mild-mannered, Sousei's pretty sure that there's something not quite right about him, and he's always been pretty observant and sharp.

So Sousei doesn't like Kaoru. It's not actually Kaoru's fault, honestly. Sousei doesn't like anything he doesn't understand, and he doesn't understand Kaoru at all. But nonetheless, that would've all been harmless if Kaoru hadn't done the biggest No ever.

He decided to get close to Tenka. YOU'VE READ CANON, SO YOU KNOW HOW SHITSTIRRERS WHO GET CLOSE TO TENKA RUIN EVERYTHING. Well. Sousei sure knows that too. And anyone who gives him a bad feeling around Tenka will give him a bad feeling TIMES TEN. If Oona wasn't so sincere, it might've happened with her, but she's so blunt that Sousei feels he understands her, so there's no danger there. KAORU, ON THE OTHER HAND...

So honestly, he doesn't have much of an opinion on Kaoru as a person so much as what Kaoru could mean for their life there. It's hard to build an opinion of a person who tries to act exactly like the sweet, mild-mannered person who doesn't exist at all in real life, which is part of what confuses him so much about him, honestly...But Kaoru could spell bad things for Tenka and Tenka's life, and now that Sousei has taken on that duty of protecting Tenka and acting as his right hand, he knows it's his responsibility to make sure that doesn't happen.

So I guess it's more that he dislikes everything Kaoru stands for more than the fact that he dislikes Kaoru himself at the moment.

Someday he'll realize that Kaoru reminds him of Shirasu a little and then everything will make sense--

Mary has powers and she's suffered for them, and she seems like a vulnerable kid who can nevertheless defend herself when it counts, from giant bugs for instance. But the fact that she didn't use her ability to stop the kids who were tormenting her, suggests to Hyoubu that she is extremely ambivalent about her powers, and that is something he has definitely seen in esper kids, particularly those who have been abused or abandoned. Rescuing/helping/protecting kids like that is his reason for living, literally. He was shot in the head a bunch of years ago (it got better) and thinks of himself as a ghost and his only excuse for even continuing to live is so that he can do a number of very specific things, including helping kids like this have happy endings for their fairy tales — Disney endings, specifically rather than the Hans Christian Andersen grisly fairy tale endings BUT ANYWAY.

He's probably going to keep stalking her and swooping down if he thinks she needs a hand, but also encouraging her to use her powers to defend herself because that's how kids grow up strong.

....he'll also be pretty surprised when (if) he finds out she's........ not a kid, because he has an older sister who has also managed to stave off the aging process, and she used to bully him something fierce and he's still a bit traumatized by that. Mary is obviously not a bully but the memories of it all will make him twitch. A bit.

Archer as ~feelings~ about Saber. As someone who is constantly fighting with his internal Shirou, he can't help but sincerely hate Saber in some ways. After all, it was her influence that helped him become the hero of justice that he sincerely begged to be. Without her, he probably would have been fairly bereft and powerless, unable to achieve any dreams and basically being a normal person.

On the other hand, he did used to love Saber. Certainly, that feeling doesn't exist anymore but that doesn't mean Archer doesn't remember. He enters into a cycle of self-hatred everytime he is reminded of those days of Holy Grail warring with Saber.

So, in the end, he just tries to play it cool. Not so well, since he's intent on legitimately trying to find a way to hurt Saber without it being obvious or even permanent. He just wants a bit of revenge for her involvement in his life. But being exposed to her everyday pretty much means he's trying to treat her normally but ignoring her calls for honor and heroism. It's a lot easier with jerkass Rin around, thankfully.

Sousei was prepared to dislike America from first meeting.

He's loud, and obnoxious and irritating, and weird, and hard to understand. As I just told Aki, Sousei doesn't like things he doesn't understand. He also doesn't like wastes of time, people who aren't straightforward, and basically a lot of the things America is.

The difference is that America floored him. He completely startled Sousei in that first conversation, and honestly, that's what salvaged his opinion. In one smooth moment, America convinced Sousei that he's the country just like he says he is, but also managed to make Sousei feel as though there was a lot of wisdom there to listen to after all. Sousei was honest when he said that he never wanted or needed acknowledgement or anything of the like, but that doesn't mean that it didn't feel really good to get America's acknowledgement.

And beyond just a simple acknowledgement, it was proof that America got it. He knew Sousei is a soldier, and he's the first person in Cereal who has really understood what that means. So to get the simple acknowledgement of someone who thinks that what Sousei is and does is worthwhile meant a lot to him.

And since then, he's realized that while America is obnoxious and loud and irritating, he's also wise, and occasionally thoughtful and giving. He appreciates the history lessons America gives without any of the pity or "oh no you poor 1870's person". He appreciates the way America is willing to learn, like in the dojo.

So basically, Sousei knows that there's a lot more to America that he doesn't understand, which is only natural from a country. But he does respect him for what he is, and doesn't mind having his company. Having America's acknowledgement means something to him, and that is something he'll never forget.

BUT OKAY, for one - out of everyone here aside from Anise (so basically out of cross-canon CR), Delita reminds her the most of being at home which is both really good and kinda awkward! because for so long she let him address her formally because she was just... used to having a guy in armor address her formally and call her princess and pay a lot of attention to her rank. That's fine! so in a way, she kind of defaulted to relying on Delita as someone level-headed and she trusts his eye for strategy just because he's a knight and she trusts knights and gives people the benefit of the doubt. but also it's a little awkward for her because she knows that she's letting herself see him as a knight even though she's said it herself that their positions mean nothing in this world. so it's like this weird dichotomy where she truly does think that they're equals but can't deny that she treats him a little bit differently. She doesn't even fully recognize it otherwise she would try to quash it but he has been acting according to her expectations too so it's not easy! but she does respect Delita and his opinion.

furthermore, she's a little concerned about the state of his world if he's so curious about how she monitors her country like - what place do you even come from.... the nobles sound really shitty just in passing. squabbles? no, there's no time for squabbles!! She'd heard of Malkuth's issues but as far as we know, there wasn't any sort of issues with Kimlasca's monarchy in recent times so Natalia doesn't care much for petty nobles. so to be honest she kind of just wants to kick Delita's government to the curb though she does respect his honesty when it comes to CERES'..... at least they can both hate on CERES together.

as a friend though, she does consider him one. the only odd thing that keeps it from being completely genuine friendship is probably just the fact that theyr'e both really stuffy, laughs. Natalia isn't the type to openly tell people that they're friends or do the typical ~friendship is magic~ type thing! so Delita also holding back because he's not the type just makes it sort of a general understanding of friendship, laughs. but as a person, she does like him enough. she lacks any real complicated feelings on the matter

but she does appreciate how he lets her ramble on about her country, like she loves her country, please keep asking questions and let her talk about it because god she misses home so much.

also the recent event was kind of awkward because he was just as judgmental as she was but she's mostly choosing to brush that under the rug because they both weren't themselves. she doesn't account it to be part of delita's personality to be a bully! so she's not going to worry about it.

BUT RIGHT malia ➝ annabeth: MALIA THINKS ANNABETH IS OKAY. like sure she was crazy but she's also a teen girl and malia likes... teen girls...?? that is so weird to type, but it's like -- malia likes people she can match up to people she knows at home. she's not really familiar with annabeth yet but lmao, after the classroom meeting she's just going to see her as a sort of middle ground between lydia and kira and that's good! that's more familiar to her. so she'll probably keep hanging out with her just because they're similar in age range and that kind of thing. eventually, she'll like her a lot but malia just, y'know, rolls with it!

ALSO i keep trying to figure out if malia can sniff out the godliness or not. help :'|

MARY......

america ➝ mary: america LOVES MARY SO MUCH. but it's not really... mary but more like the idea of mary. a small quiet girl who is now under his fold?? yes!! he is SO there for that. america's already immediately protective of his mcceres employees and if they let him, way too involved in their lives so when mary comes to mcceres looking for a job to be useful! to everyone! this basically sets him off completely. he admires that sort of drive and community spirit. so really, america's 100% there for mary if she needs him because he just... loves the idea of him helping out this little girl who wants to do her best! it's like a movie, mary. a movie.

OZ LIKES ROCK LEE SO MUCH ALREADY it's ridiculous?! He's a really high-energy person himself at times (even if he's honestly nowhere near Lee's levels.....) so having someone who just seems hype to be alive makes him hype to be alive and then they basically become an echo chamber of Too Much Excitement and it's honestly hilarious. But no one else really does anything like that with him!! Most of his friends are pretty reasonable on the scale of manic energy, so Oz is usually the one left doing all of the cheering and dragging people around and encouraging stupid things because WHY NOT etc. So it's actually kind of refreshing to him, to meet someone like ROCK LEE who has such an intense enthusiasm for everything that it outshines even his own... keep on keepin on leotard friend.....

He's also very, very impressed by Rock Lee's physical aptitude! Like, okay, he comes from a world of skinny nerd pseudo-Victorians and they all just kind of shuffle around like losers, except for a small handful who can actually physically kick ass even without the help of their weird supernatural hellbeast friends. Oz is obviously not one of those people?! He's a beanpole and even though he has fair stamina for someone his size and age, he definitely isn't at the 100s of pushups level. Seeing Lee blast through them like it was nothing and then benchpress his own weight too was like this moment of "WOAH THAT'S NEAT, I WANT TO BE LIKE THAT." Whether he'll actually reach that goal is questionable, but he will totally stick with Lee anyway...even if it's just to be his backweight....

ON A WHOLE even though he doesn't know the guy very well, exactly, he definitely wants to learn more about him! And already considers Lee a friend too, obviously... Partly because he makes friends and gets attached to people REALLY DANG QUICK and partly because Lee just has a really friendly, open and warm personality that Oz gravitates toward! MORE FRIENDSHIP IS BOUND TO HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE until they eventually end up injuring themselves with the power of youth or something, r.i.p nerds

And not that she knows it but yet another thing Archer has ~feelings~ about. Mainly having to abandon Illya to go be a super hero. He feels like he missed out on being a big brother and gosh, does Mary look a lot like her. It certainly can't be denied that there's a resemblance and Archer feels some tugs at his barely existent heartstrings. Or just regret. He's got a lot of that.

Either way, he knows he's just indulging his own inner desires when he helps out Mary but its really one of the few times he does it so he figures it's not going to hurt anyone in the long run. And probably make Mary feel better in the shortrun, maybe. If he could stop being something of a jerk to her. If there ever came a day when she figures out he's actively doing things specifically for her or why, he'll probably stop instantly. Mostly in shame. And in more regret. archer.jpg

Which btw, he'd laugh internally if he found out Yang said he was good looking but had a shitty attitude. And give her even more trash talk. He doesn't need anyone looking at him differently in any way!!

Still, she's incredibly annoying but she's also incredibly social. He kind of wishes Rin would be more social, which is why he wanted to push her to attend the party. Yeah, mostly in hopes that a little bit would rub off onto her or Yang could sneak her way into Rin's friendship circle somehow. He doesn't know how that went and he doesn't have high hopes but, hey. Yang is the type to ignore long odds so Archer is going to at least know he didn't pick the wrong person for that job.

Well, the first thing that Natalia really noticed about Totsuka is that he's basically a civilian.... Like, why on earth were you in a place where they were fighting a ghost monster thing?! He even got a dumb bruise from it and Natalia's got a special sort of concern for people who get caught up in fights. So she healed him and will probably always prioritize healing him if he keeps getting caught up in scuffles but she also hopes with everything she has that he doesn't get caught up in scuffles. like calm down Totsuka and also run the hell away....

but jfc then he started talking and the thing about Totsuka is that he's disarmingly!! charming!!!! yeah he went on about things like magical girls and whatever and she was perfectly fine and polite with the conversation but then he talked about how he met a special person and she's like wAIT YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW I'M A PRINCESS, WHY ARE YOU COMPLIMENTING ME..... and that's when she was reminded of Guy. He continues to be absurdly charming and complimentary, like telling her that she seems like a reasonable person and that he's counting her to help them search for Fushimi and she's just like "you barely even know me why do you think so well of me"

WHICH WOULDN'T BE WEIRD TO HER if he knew that she was a princess. It's fine when people think that she's a princess and then expect more of her, she's used to that. but he doesn't know her from the next person and he's still sweet.... and she doesn't know what to do about it. She gets flustered and confused and tHEN THERE'S THAT TIME SHE SLAPPED HIM and she feels bad.... because Totsuka was probably just still being his sweet self and she overreacted once the event was over, LAUGHS.

in general though, he's really friendly and seems like a nice guy so she's fond of him! And gives Yata the benefit of the doubt even when he's being rude because he's Totsuka's friend.

but delita... as a rule, delita does not tend to like people. even when he likes them, he tends to see them more as pawns or things like that than actual people, so to speak. like, even ramza, who is His Literal Best Childhood Friend is someone who he's willing to manipulate. he's not really fond of it, but he's willing to. and even ovelia, who i could write a fucking entire essay about delita's mixed up feelings towards the princess he marries - it's complicated but yeah he's using her.

he would probably use natalia too. but he'd feel bad. and, more importantly, he would look for a way to do it without doing so, and honestly she's probably one of the only, if not the only, person here that he'd immediately do that for. maybe yuri too, but outside of that --

he'd never admit this, but she is basically what he wants nobility to be. it's not quite a hero worship but an... he looks up to her in a way that he literally doesn't look up to anyone in canon except MAYBE balbanes, because fft is a shitty world and tales games tend to be significantly less shitty. yes, she's noble, but she doesn't think any higher of herself for it, and in fact seems to think that everyone's well being is her responsibility, which frankly just isn't really a thing in ivalice.

like, the fact that she puts other people's well being at a higher priority than her own. the score thing? A HUGE DEAL to him, even though he didn't express it that much, because that sort of blindly following something - just taking "your role" in life - is exactly the sort of thing that delita's fighting against, why he's proving that delita heiral, of common blood, can be a hero, can become king, can fix injustice. he knows how fucked up the church is in ivalice, and he has a very dim view of religion despite supposedly working for the church and being a holy knight - and to have the balls to not only go "yeah, you know that thing that literally defines everything about us? how about we, you know, ignore that is... uh, she gets a crazy amount of respect from him.

and he doesn't think she's the kind of person who would lie about that either. he has no reason to doubt her, because she's not... shady in the same way that, say, yuri is (sorry yuri).

he doesn't think of her as a friend just because he doesn't really have ... friends - he's sort of closed himself off. but if he were going to open up to anyone, it'd be natalia and it's not even close, and he would... uh, he'd be super fucking pissed if anyone tried to hurt her, because he genuinely feels that if more people were like her he wouldn't have had to go through the shit he did

SO IN THEIR TALKS, Natalia is so concerned about Killua's home life okay and that's where a lot of her feelings that surround him come from. He seems so young and yet it sounds like that he was treated so poorly back home and she doesn't like that even a little bit!! Natalia doesn't really have big sister instincts so much as she has princess instincts and those instincts tell her that everyone, but especially children, should be well cared for especially within their own families. like her own family situation is weird but at least she was raised with love and care. but to hear about how poorly Killua was treated pissed her off a lot and inspired a lot of protective feelings

because he seems like a sweet boy! and also too clever for his own good..... trying to get her to tell his friend about her being a princess smh. she does trust Killua to keep the secret and she doesn't seem to realize that his friend is gone but still. the thing is that he's a child to her and she always expects children to be really earnest and to be very serious about things like promises. like she really doesn't worry about Killua ever leaking her secret for that reason even if she doesn't completely trust him.

but honestly she just thinks he's a good person, despite the whole sacrificing thing. she seems to realize that was something that the world brought on and obviously isn't something that Killua wouldn't do naturally. After all, she was acting oddly herself. She feels more awful about drawing her bow on him than anything else. If anything, she's kind of ashamed about that because she would hate to think that she nearly harmed him :c

OONA BABE...

Okay so Sousei's thoughts on Oona are refreshingly straightforward, because Oona is refreshingly straightforward. Seriously. He wishes everyone was as honest as Oona. They should all get right on that. Her personality in general already endears him to her, because she doesn't waste time, she doesn't mince words, and she says what she thinks. There's no subterfuge, no ridiculous politics, nothing. Just flat out Oona's thoughts and opinions and after all of the politics he's dealt with and people like Tenka, who like to hide everything behind a smile, it's refreshing as hell.

Then there's also the fact that Oona's circumstances are something Sousei can relate to a lot. Not necessarily on a personal level of "i've been there and experienced that", but more in a "i understand exactly where you're coming from". He's from the Abe family, even if he didn't spend any actual time with them. More than anyone, he understands the divide between humans and non-humans--and also how nonexistent that divide can be sometimes. So no, she isn't a monster to him. She's non-human, yes, she's a mermaid, which he accepts easily, but that does not make her a monster, and her personality does not either, and so she's not one. It's simple, to him.

Because he accepts her beliefs on humans too. She calls them monsters. She's right. Sousei's family were monstrous too, in a neglectful way. The people who experimented on Tenka were monsters. Iwakura is a monster, willing to let hundreds of people die for his own gain. So of course he'll protect her, if she needs it. He doesn't have Tenka's starry-eyed optimism; he knows that sometimes, you can't talk people out of their preconceived ideas. So if anyone ever tries to hurt her for not being human, he will sure be there to slam some sense into their heads with the blunt end of his sword. She's definitely been taken under his wing at the very least.

That all said, he knows she's competent, so when she offered to help him look out for Tenka and he accepted, that wasn't an empty acceptance. He doesn't say things he doesn't mean. He really will be trusting her to look out for Tenka's well-being when he isn't being quite sensible, and considers her an equal when it comes to that.

Someday, he intends to ask her more about her experiences, because he thinks it's better to talk about them than to bottle them up, and if she needs more reassurance, he's willing to tell her more about the Yamainu too--she's still the only person who knows their true purpose, but as someone who has gone through what she has, he knows that he can trust her with it.

well for one, Natalia admires Yang's directness!! like it's something that's definitely different from her own confidence and yet not so far off that she's put off by it. Rather, they sort of both existence in this plane of confidence and bluntness that Natalia appreciates, laughs. communication with yang is easy because Natalia can definitely just trust her to speak her mind and give her opinion and never really pull any punches! which makes it easier for Natalia to relax too.

with Tana and Kougyoku gone now, Natalia really does hope that Yang will stay and continue to be her friend since she's been lacking in female friends otherwise. Yang can appreciate a good manicure and spa day better than any of Natalia's male friends would obviously. also being able to talk about boys and eat cake is definitely a plus. she also thinks that Yang would know more about how common girls spend their days and enjoy things - like she got the feeling from Anise and Tear that treats like sweets and spa days are still appreciated - but what about movies? And this thing about cuddling fluffy pillows - that's something Natalia didn't know either!! she has so much to learn in terms of girly bonding clearly.....

so there's a lot that Natalia hopes to learn from Yang but also there's just as many things that she hopes to share! they're both clearly battle ready and she'd love to fight alongside Yang and provide her support. they've talked about what it's like to fight alongside others and Natalia is at the point where she'd definitely trust Yang with her back in the middle of a fight.

but I guess the one thing that Natalia hasn't mentioned to Yang is the fact that she's a princess..... and she's kind of vaguely dancing around it but also I have no idea how long that will last if it'll last at all, laughs. maybe by the end of their current thread, she'll admit it. But only because she innately trusts Yang with that information and thinks that she's a good friend who's done nothing but be honest and truthful with Natalia before. She's been less concerned about actively hiding it as a result. She doesn't think Yang will treat her differently at all and that's.... honestly a really comforting thought!!

overall though Yang will probably continue to apply peer pressure and encouragement and Natalia will cave because she's gullible

MOSTLY FIRST IMPRESSIONS HERE. Mary is a cute girl an Natalia respects her desire to help people a lot. It seems like she lacks a bit of courage but Natalia will always be willing to provide that. Honestly, she just thinks that Mary is really adorable and wants to protect her from anything that might frighten or surprise her in this world!! again, not really big sister feelings here because Natalia doesn't naturally incline herself to being a big sister but rather just that gracious princess instinct that wants everyone to be as comfortable as possible

THERE'S NOTHING THAT ENDEARS SOUSEI TO TOTSUKA. Totsuka is troublesome, good at getting himself into trouble, doesn't listen to Sousei when he speaks, pesters him constantly and refuses to leave him alone. None of those things are things Sousei enjoys. As far as he's concerned, Totsuka is wasting his time, and it sure doesn't make him happy at all. SOMEONE TO AVOID--
