OK so if I have my dates right (oh ZKC you and your time-skipping ways) Unlimited happened I'm gonna say about 2 years prior to Hyoubu's canon point. When you're in your 80's, two years seems like yesterday. So what happened then is still pretty fresh in his mind, that is: he meets attractive spy, tries to woo him to the dark side....

...and fails. Except Andy comes around on his own, and fights roombas and fujoshi soldiers back to back with him, and saves his life etc. Andy is obviously going to join PANDRA and they're all going to sail off into the sunset with their hundred kids or whatever. Except Andy walks out on everyone, even trying to sneak off without saying goodbye.

He even tried to give the limiter back with the goddamn heart on it, Andy what is your problem???

Of course, the irony is that had Andy stayed with PANDRA, he would have been held firmly at arm's length. He'd have to report to Magi, and refer to Hyoubu as "Major" and any pretense of intimacy would disappear because that's just how Hyoubu relates to other human beings.

Fast forward two years and Andy has joined forces with Princess Sophie, which Hyoubu grudgingly accepts is a good use of time, particularly since it offers a chance for Yugiri to have some stability and safety in her life, living with two people she loves. Hyoubu would have been delighted to keep her on the Catastrophe indefinitely, but with all the PANDRA kids going to Normal school, it would be very hard for her to accept that no, she can't go too, because her powers are so unstable.

And so anyway, that would have been that. But then Andy turns up in imaginary space, when Hyoubu is feeling a bit vulnerable as you do when you've just been stabbed through the chest with a steeple and inexplicably saved the life of your own worst enemy. Andy still has that limiter on (WITH THE HEART) and Hyoubu isn't sure what to make about that. In any case, they seem to fall back into their old ways of relating to one another, two years ago really seeming like yesterday, with Hyoubu teasing and flirting — but making it clear that flirting is just another way to rattle Andy, and definitely never, ever serious.

And then the damn Tarot card event thing happened. Dog!Andy was all over him, basically demanding physical affection; and having pulled the Chariot card, Hyoubu's thoughts went way way beyond whatever he has ever consciously admitted to himself. And so when the event ended, he was willing to take the plunge... and made a complete fool of himself. Or at least that's how he sees things. If he were an actual adult, he'd talk to Andy about it and they could resolve what happened one way or another. But the thing about Hyoubu is that although he has lived for a long time, he's still a teenager, mentally. Add to that his baseline levels of guilt and violent self-loathing, and you get a guy who really can't talk about his feelings in any rational or mature manner.

So! He's going to pretend it never happened. But he's always going to have this itching, nagging feeling in the back of his mind, this "what if?" And he'll go through a thousand explanations and justifications and then shut himself down and then start wondering again. Which is going to make him even more insufferable to live with, sorry Andy.

GOD OKAY this CR is so delightful because it's just so weird and I don't even know how to describe it. You toss together two kinds of very odd people who aren't very socially savvy and you get....this. Whatever this is. It's certainly nothing altogether too normal--

But okay. At first, Sousei really did think Milla didn't like him, for the record. They had just met and she was already verbally abrasive to him. He's used to taking verbal abuse, so it didn't necessarily bother him, but the fact that she would then proceed to tell him that he was a good captain and to offer him soup, to ask about his preferences....all of those things? Weird. Not the sort of thing someone who dislikes someone would do. And then she agreed to go to tea with them, which while he chalks up mostly to Tenka's very forceful personality, he has to admit that she can't hate him if she doesn't mind spending time with him.

So then, if she doesn't hate him, what are they exactly? He's not sure. He honestly doesn't mind spending time with her or talking with her either, honestly. She's odd, but she's blunt, and he appreciates bluntness in a person. She's competent enough, and honestly? She's kind of entertaining.

Sousei has an odd sense of humor, but she's managed to pull the more wry, teasing aspect out of him and has amused him more than once, just by how she is. So it's not like it's a hardship to spend time with her; she doesn't bug him.

BUT THEY AREN'T FRIENDS.

Okay, but more honestly, they are friends. The problem is, Sousei is socially stunted in his own way. He's not necessarily tsundere, but he isn't really familiar with friendship as a concept. His best friends, Tenka and Kiiko, are family more than anything. Everyone else in his life is either more family (the Yamainu), or his subordinates (also the Yamainu, but also mostly Takeda), or his fanclub (see: Soramaru). So the reason he won't admit that they're friends is mostly because he legitimately doesn't realize that this is what friendship is. Maybe someday he'll figure it out so he can admit it then...

And on a side note, he is really interested in her as a person. He has a personal refusal to pry into other peoples' lives, but her "former Lord of Spirits" title and the way she reacted when he said it was still a part of her was interesting. He thinks that she has some issues that she needs to work out, but she won't if she never talks about them.

Still, since THEY AREN'T FRIENDS he doesn't necessarily think that it's his place to try to help her with those things anyway. But if she ever did need his help with something, he'd give it without hesitation, because he likes her, and her attitude, and the way she tackles things.
