...starts with the easier pair first...

LEON IS STILL A BUTT but Rise's basically allowing most of his insults to roll off of her like water rolls off of a duck. She's pretty sure he's mostly all bark and little bite when it comes to their interactions and she's used to this with Kanji on a smaller scale. She's caught on to the fact that Leon can generally be a nice person for the people he feels are worth it which...is maybe 2% of the entire colony. Gosh, Leon. In all seriousness even before Otome told her she had to keep trying she picked up that sense when Leon checked in with her post-robots and again post-interlude. She wants to continue reaching out to him and his fussiness does very little to deter her. Sometimes he startles her and she's not quite mature enough not to devolve into a yelling match with him, but she'll always come back and always make sure he's doing okay even if he doesn't want her to. DEAL WITH IT. She's aware there's someone worth knowing and she's going to find out if it kills her.

Now...for the dork-puppies.

Ruby continues to be one of the most important people in the colony to him, if not the most important on some days. As someone who's still sometimes spooked by the intensity of his own emotions, he's finding that it's a lot easier to just feel things and act on those feelings when it comes to Ruby. Since the beginning of their relationship until now he's become more affectionate and thinks a lot less of it. He's still nervous about actual intimacy and their first kiss but only when he's really consciously thinking about it. Ruby is someone who continually represents optimism and hope and even just thinking about her is enough to bring a bright smile to his face. He thinks she's incredible in pretty much every way possible and will never hesitate to say so whether it be to her face or to someone else when he speaks of her. She's the one who tends to tether him to reality and makes sure he stays on track and doesn't get carried away.

It's not that he needs someone to take care of him, but rather he feels that their relationship is mutually beneficial. They're both able to rely on each other and help each other and it's been this way since the very beginning. Ruby understands several things about him that no one else can really understand such as what it's like to be thrown into a leadership/hero role almost unexpectedly to being socially awkward and having a hard time making friends to being in the shadow of an older sibling they intensely admire to being something special, a prodigy. He knows he can talk to her about anything but more importantly he knows he doesn't have to say much at all for Ruby to understand. Ruby has always been able to understand him perfectly and it's one of the reasons he never feels too bad for showing his more vulnerable sides to her.

When she disappeared for those three days it sort of felt like dying. He'll never actually explain it to her but it was a very raw kind of panic and grief he wasn't used to anymore and when she came back he vowed to try harder not to let her out of his sight for too long. He knows that they're both aware they can take care of themselves, but it's the reasoning behind being a better friend and a better boyfriend. It's the reasoning behind texts at all hours of the day, more natural hugs and cuddling and being more upfront about what he's thinking instead of worrying that it'll be too much and she won't want to deal with it. Ruby understands grief and loss and things he never wanted her to understand, but he's doing his best to be there for her.

At the end of the day, he recognizes the fact that he's moving past the puppylove dokis phase into something a little more powerful, possibly to where he's falling in love with her. He won't admit it because he thinks it's silly and he doesn't want it to be something bigger than what Ruby wants or what they can understand, but if confronted or prompted he'd explain it that way. Ruby is someone who has made his life for the better and has given him hope and allowed him to be himself in the face of all of the craziness that Cerealia has to offer. In addition to finding a way to bring Tadashi back, his main priority is finding a way to bridge their worlds so he can stay with her because being with her is a little like breathing. It's so natural and an integral part of his life, but he knows how bad it'll hurt if she's not there anymore. SO TL;CR Disney magic, etc etc.
