BUT UGH OKAY Kashuu, like pretty much every other dang gumi in existence, has that "GUMIS ARE FAMILY" mentality even if he shows it like a moron... It's why he cares about every Souji that shows up and why he prizes his relationship with the other gumi swords so much and why he still can't move on even hundreds of years after everyone is DEAD... They just mean A Lot to him, and Hijikata isn't an exception. Sure, he's not as close to him as he was to Okita, but he was still Okita's valuable comrade and the vice commander of the group that he served under for the strongest formative years of his early life.

This Hijikata is kind of A New Experience since he's, you know, not the Hijikata that Kashuu remembers BUT!! In the same way that he accepts all of the Soujis, he accepts this Hijikata as a Hijikata too, important in his own right but also sharing the same things that made the original Hijikata important. He's a good fighter and a strong leader who looks out for his own, with convictions and beliefs that make him a man worth looking up to and following - or that's what he remembers of his own Hijikata, anyway. As long as Horikawa is treated well and believes him to be worthy of the same respect, that's exactly what Hijikata will get.

GRANTED Kashuu was also blessed with the innate instinct to just bully the shit out of him, oops... He wouldn't hesitate to send his dumb Hogyoku poems to the entire colony or post that toilet picture on his blog, but he doesn't do it to be malicious or because he dislikes Hijikata. He just does it because Hiji paints a bigass "I'M EASY TO BULLY" target on his back and Kashuu always takes advantage of those because usually he's the one getting bullied. BUT EVEN THEN, even though he wouldn't hesitate to make his life Difficult™ or mercilessly tease him, he's still part of the gumi fam at the end of the day, so Kashuu trusts him and would have his back any time.
